![]() Caoyuan Hutong No. 23, Bei Xiaojie, Dongzhimen Nei, Dongcheng District. 东城区东直门内北小街香草园胡同 23 号6405-2082. Tucked away in a hutong just north of Ghost Street, this restaurant is tough to find, but well worth hunting for. Dine in a beautifully refurbished traditional Beijing courtyard. There's outdoor courtyard seating in the warmer months, a coffee bar with vegan desserts (good brownies) and other vegan products (usually candles, incense, organic tea, nut-milk powders, soap, etc), and two larger rooms with indoor seating. The back-most room has a beautiful glass roof and circular windows leading out to a small garden. The décor is gorgeous and peaceful and the food is fantastic. It’s worth paying prices that are a step above Beijing’s cheapest vegetarian restaurants. Try the Suizhuyu (spicy fake-fish bowl), the Nangua Gang (Pumpkin Soup), and the Qian Ceng Bing (Thousand Layer Bread). The curry fake-chicken plate is a tasty new special. The organic green tea is also wonderful. |
